Milaya (Alexandrian) Dance Workshop - Flirtatious. Sassy. Cheeky. In Charge!

Sunday June 29, 2008 - Guelph Studio - 10:00am - 1:00pm

The Milaya Dance is a flirtatious character dance from the city of Alexandria in Egypt where Voula's mother was from.
The dancer wears a dress with a ruffled neckline & hem and is tightly wrapped in a heavy shawl (the milaya il'laff).
The fun begins when the woman lets the milaya innocently "slip", dancing with it over her arms, then covering up again.

The Milaya dance has a fascinating history.  The dance style can be earthy and strong or light and coy.  But even
when the mood is flirtatious, it is a knowing flirtation - and the woman is in charge. The milaya dance is about
Alexandrian women being cheeky and flirty, while carrying on their day to day activities.  The milaya is used to
conceal and reveal in a fun, upbeat, casual, saucy kind of a way. The dancer will arrange it and rearrange it to show
off her stuff. A choreography and technique will be taught by Voula.

Who should attend this workshop:

  • any level of dancer who wants to expand their dance repertoire
  • anyone who wants to learn more about Egyptian culture, history and dance style
  • anyone who wants to improve the theatrics of their performance by being challenged
  • to convey the 'act' and attitude of this special dance, similar to the women from Alexandria who remain
    powerful, cheeky, flirty and saucy.
  • anyone who wants to improve their management of scarves and props when dancing.

The number of spaces in this workshop is limited. There are only 15 spots available.  If you have not already registered,
please register by email. This workshop is open to everyone and dancers of all levels.  Please feel free to forward this
email and invite your friends!
